Here’s a great narrative that will give you a sense of what the grunts had to go through in Vietnam.
My Amazon Review follows:
This book is a riveting, compelling account of the transformation of a young “cherry” new grunt in Vietnam to a battle-hardened combat veteran. This was a book I just couldn’t stop reading. Every chapter leads into the next, and the scenes are so realistically described, the reader feels like he is there in the jungle with “Polack”. This book couldn’t have been written by someone who wasn’t there, experiencing what the Cherries went through. I spent two tours in Vietnam, but my experiences, as a pilot (which inspired Hamfist Over The Trail: The Air Combat Adventures of Hamilton “Hamfist” Hancock (The Adventures of Hamilton “Hamfist” Hancock 1)), had none of the austerity and danger that Polack went through. When you finish this book, you will find yourself seeking out Vietnam vets who were grunts, just so you can look them in the eyes and say “THANK YOU for your service”!
